OK, let me talk about unrelated things for a paragraph or so because autosummaries ignore spoiler tags and choose the most unfortunate bit to preview. Which I ranted about, but forgot to work round :(
They killed Michelle Yeoh? WTF? I hadn't thought a battallion of klingon battlecruisers could kill Michelle Yeoh, but I was wrong.
Also, it's a bit of a giveaway listing her as "Special Guest Star". That made me think this boded badly. If you're going to put spoilers in the credits can you put them in separate credits at the end?
I hope this doesn't reduce the Bechdel quotient of the rest of the series. I LIKED those two characters.
OK, the "next episode" bit makes this look a lot less episodic than I was expecting when I watched the first five minutes of the first episode. In some ways that's good, I'm more interested in plot than planet-of-the-week episodes. But I thought they could have lots of character development while still following the basic outline.
I LIKED the ship, and the bridge crew. I wanted a whole series of that.
AND I DON'T WANT A GALACTIC RACE WAR. I wanted something uplifting and pro-hope. Like, there have to be some antagonists, but it's 2017, couldn't we show a federation/klingon conflict without making out one side to be the bad guys? Presumably there are, like, normal klingons somewhere? In rooms with chairs, and food, and suchlike? Who don't just stand around saying "death and honour", but have every day jobs? Even on starships? Can't we see some of them?
OK, I know, people have been saying "it's [year], doesn't that mean society has advanced to my point of view yet" ever since they invented progress and it doesn't make it true. But I'm still sad that it isn't.
Also, I wish news sites and search engines were better at keeping spoilers out of headlines and extracts. Yes "surprise casualty" is a spoiler, ok? Especially if you were searching for "Michelle Yeoh."
