With playing Photosynthesis yesterday my approach (as it so often is) was to guess the primary language of the game designer from their name, then read the rules in that language or a related one, because often a lot of the problem is in the translation; I definitely think the German rules for Photosynthesis were clearer in several places than the English ones.

This does of course require a fairly substantial up-front investment, though...
