I did discuss this elsewhere at one point. I thought the sensible thing to do was cut the tie, and remove ability scores entirely except that during character creation. Which would say something like, you can point buy, use the standard array of -1,0,+1,+1,+2,+2, or roll for ability modifiers. Roll for ability modifiers with four dice marked "-1,-1,0,0,+1,+1" and discard the worst result. Maybe using negative dice goes too far -- you could use regular d6 and calculate a number from 3 to 18, but write it somewhere non-emphasised, instead of right at the front of your character sheet.

Several people pointed out that there are some important prerequisites that depend on odd ability scores: most requirements for feats, armour or multiclassing are 13 i think. But I think that's a fairly small part of the game and could easily be changed if they got rid of odd scores.

Alternatively, they could use halves in modifiers :) Or equivalently, double everything in the game :)
