For years I've listened to DVDs starting with legally and philosophically dubious and impolite warnings along the lines of "WE KNOW YOU SECRETLY HATE US, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT [DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF HOW EASY IT IS TO STEAL FROM US], WE KNOW YOU'RE A HORRIBLE PERSON WHO WOULD DO IT AT THE DROP OF A HAT. WELL, DON'T. PS: Give us more money plskthx." And I've always wondered about the psychology of it.

Now I've started getting DVDs that say "Thank you for buying from us! You're awesome! Let's do awesome things together! Yay us! Can we have more money please?"[1] I'm not sure it's less cynical, and it's a bit late to have started to be nice to me when they're desperate, but it's a lot, lot pleasanter to listen to.

[1] Exact phrasing "Thank you for supporting your local film and video industry".
