Compact Conflict

Last game I managed to conquer the whole map and upgrade all my temples to the maximum. And I'm practicing deploying my general principles of strategy: conquering area seems good, but best to get into fights only when you have overwhelming force advantage, best to bottle up a couple of strong points until you can save up and push out in all directions.
But I haven't gone off "easy AI" yet. And it's the sort of game where I expect some strategy I'm not seeing because it doesn't feel right might be far-and-away better (squatting on temples saving up troops? taking advantage of AI quirks? making a beeline for enemy armies and crushing them?).
Also, I finally started playing mini metro and ouch, all the addictiveness. It's so simple, why is it so hard?
