Museum of Classics
Mar. 27th, 2016 11:41 pmAt lunchtime, I managed to go to the museum of classics at lunchtime. I didn't even know it existed until I saw it was in Twilight at the Museums. It was quite cool! Lots of really giant casts of classical statues.
Statues, unlike flat art, look a lot more like I expect people to look like.
Several are REALLY LARGE, which is always impressive.
Everyone mostly has really heroic body types, although maybe in a different direction to contemporary expectations.
One replica was painted, which was really interesting, I find it really hard to remember that was probably supposed to be the norm.
Most felt a bit like they'd gone for a "safe" representation of a God or suchlike, with a face that was perfect, but not loaded with expression, but a few really jumped out at me -- a tired warrior, a slave polishing a knife, and a faun, sprawled languorously on a rock.
