Top Ten Most Amusing Sequel Titles1:

1. "Alien", "Aliens"
2. "Ocean's 11", "Ocean's 12", "Ocean's 13"2
3. "Cube", "Hypercube"
4. "Band of Gold", "Gold"3
5. "The Matrix", "The Third Rank Tensor", "The Fourth Rank Tensor"
6. "XXX", "XXXX"
7. "X-Men", "XX-Women"
8. "You wait ages for one, then three Godots turn up at once!"
9. "Dude, Where's My Car?" "Seriously, Dude, Where's My Car?"
10. "The Madness of King George III"5

[1] Some were really used and some not. Can you guess which?

[2] Actually, this just seems dull, I don't know why

[3] Is that the only overlapping but shorter sequel title ever? The first was TV drama about several prostitutes; the second was when one of them made rich.

[4] I left about Naked Gun 3.3 as that's supposed to be silly.

[5] OK, they never made the madnesses of king george the i and ii. But I wanted to include it :)

[6] Which have I missed out?

ETA: I suppose "Day of the Triffids" and "Night of the Triffids" should be somewhere, mainly because they just annoy me by the sequel being disappointing, but now me being unable to remember which came first. After all, which does come first, night or day (please, no answers).

"I Know What You Did The Summer Before Last", and "You Only Live Once".

(If we were going the other way, I still think P*O*T*A*T*O would be the best prequel title ever.)

*snork* OK, "P*O*T*A*T*O" just wins everything :)

(And is surprisingly hard to type; apparently my brain runs out of iterators :))

FWIW, You only live once actually is a film. Perhaps. "You only live thrice" or "You only live n-1 times"? :)

This sounds like a round from ISIHAC, anyway:

"Seal" through to "Sixth Seal"
The sequel to "À bout de souffle", "Inhalateur"
"The Thing" and the sequel "The Other Thing"

When I was young I truly did think that Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a sequel.

Ha. LOL. Prequels are definitely the way to go.

You could actually *do* "Seal", they're all listed out (more or less) in revelations :)

Well, that makes sense. I only now just discovered what it meant from wikipedia (though I guessed).

Dad and I used to make jokes about trying to sell "Madness of king George" to American producers. "But the audiences having seen the first hundred and ten madnesses of king george, why will they watch this one?"

Though I suppose 102 dalmations should have been on my list somewhere.

Oh! I only ever heard the title said, I thought it was just "Alien 3". So I just listed the first two.

I don't remember the film well, don't remember if I like it or not. Did it include a lot of cubing? If so, cool; if not, it would be more in heavy metal umlaut territory than it ought :)

Did it include a lot of cubing?

It did involve a prisoner getting accidentally diced in a ventilation shaft! But I suspect they mainly thought a superscript 3 would look more interesting on the posters :-) Wikipedia mentions the alternative pronunciation of the title...

I have a soft spot for the film (aside from the fact I think it's a great film) because it was what I saw the very first time I ever "went out" with someone. Actually, he tried to avoid me on the night, and I ended up driving round Headington until I spotted him on the street and persuaded him into the car (I was determined not to be stood up). But it still has good memories for me.

LOL. That's great. I had to check if they actually did that :)
