I think the founding Virginians would *flip* if they knew people were trying to say they aren't a state. :-P I mean, the stars on the flag are there for a reason (one for each state!), and certainly when Jefferson was writing about the thirteen original states as "free and independent states," I'm sure he fully intended his own "state" to be included. Those people who are trying to discount Virginia as a commonwealth are idiots.
