I thought I covered that with "Which way was the man going? Let's say 'from saint Ives', because that's traditional, ignoring the fact that I've certainly met people going the same way I'm going before, and that he might have been going to the *other* st ives."
I never knew why it was supposed to be obvious that the man was going the other way, except by the meta-logic that the rhyme had to be a trick and this was the most obvious trick.
