Oh! Apparently the screenplay was worked on (to some extent) by Michael Chabon! Maybe that explains why it was good :)

I often find some favourite films or books come from a good writer taking on an idea that sounds a bit simple at first, like George Martin writing superhero novels or space opera, or John M Ford writing star-trek tie in novels.
