I think nuclear power stations are probably the best option at the moment: avoid the problems with fossil fuels, but fusion and other renewables aren't ready yet.

Is space really an option for nuclear waste, though? I didn't think I'd heard it suggested seriously -- until we develop past rockets, which doesn't seem to be soon, is the amount of nuclear waste even vaguely affordable to launch into orbit (let alone out of the solar system?)
