As an experiment, I tried on-the-spot exercising stepping up onto a step and back down, a la step aerobics in lieu of running once. It definitely worked better than trying to do running on the spot or crouching and leaping, and I feel like I did have a workout. And it would be really nice to have something that worked inside (where there's TV and no rain).

However, I didn't feel like I pushed myself the same way I do when I have a timed jog. It felt like times I tried to jog when I gave up hitting my original target speed, and alternate between bursts of activity and then bursts of slough.

Any suggestions for ways of doing it more effectively (or whether I should try at all)?

It seems like "count the number of steps and beep if they fall below a certain rate" would be easily within the grasp of a simple accelerometer app, but at first glance all the exercise apps I saw seemed focussed on doing something more complicated which I didn't really want. Any suggestions?
