Daily Happiness
Jan. 9th, 2026 08:54 pmtorachan1. It's the weekend! I am continuing to feel fairly optimistic about the upcoming February deadline at work, so hopefully that won't change. There's enough other stress going on outside of work.
2. Chloe doesn't really like any of the other cats but Molly, though her tolerance level for the others varies. She is the least tolerant of Jasper, though, so it was so nice to see her, Molly, and Jasper all on the bed together! And it happened two days in a row, too!

Every time this comes around, I say I'd love to read a post-canon Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic set at least a couple decades after the show, long after the world's learned the truth about Slayers, vampires, demons, magic, and the endless battle between good and evil, where Buffy's famous enough that her arrival is heralded much as Miranda was in the "gird your loins" scene from The Devil Wears Prada, with Buffy having learned to command that level of respect and control. Few people write Buffy as an older woman, and even fewer try to reckon with a vastly changed world years or decades after the end of the show. It's possible this is already written and I just haven't seen it; if that's the case, I'm wishing someone would send it to me.
2. For ages, I've thought a vid of Peggy Olson from Mad Men to "All The Nasties" by Elton John would be an excellent character study. Beyond the on-the-nose of Don Draper to "sacred cows just fake it" and the turn of a show about advertising to a song about cultivating images and the struggle to be seen honestly, I can't ever get the image of the outro and the last "oh my soul" being Roger playing the piano while Peggy roller-skates across the empty SCDP offices, effortlessly leaving the frame as the song fades away.
3. If there's any Tom Cruise or Top Gun icons out there, please let me know. As was the custom, as I still enjoy doing, I'd love an appropriate fandom icon.
4. Related, fanart of the two live-action Interview with the Vampire Lestats where they're kissing while hovering and the actors' real-world height difference is both mitigated and made clear would curl my toes in the best way. If this is out there, please let me know; if not, please let me know about anyone's taking IWTV commissions and I'll see what funds I can budget.
5. As ever, as always, as usual, transformative works based on my fics. Fanart, banners, covers, podfics, moodboards - it's always a joy and it never gets old.

Hummingbird Salamander
A woman is given a mysterious taxidermied hummingbird and a mysterious note and throws her entire life away trying to find out why. I did not like this much at all, but I think I would have liked it better if I hadn't been listening to the audiobook. The narrator was lovely, no problem with her. But the writing style was reeeeeeeeally annoying to listen to. I've read Annihilation and the two original sequels (haven't read the recent one yet) and don't remember if it was like this in those and I just vibed with it better because I can skim or if he changed his style up a bit, but it's super annoying here. The narration is also very rambling and goes over and over the same things so many times, which also gets annoying to listen to, but would have been easier to deal with when reading. But that wasn't the only issue as the story itself also felt very weak to me. The final reveal at the end was interesting, but the rest was just pretty boring. Also the constant focus on the protagonist's size felt weird. She is stated to be six foot and 230 pounds, which is large for a woman, but not so out of the ordinary yet it's treated as if she's the hulk or something, and constantly commented on by herself and others.

I had no idea there was a new volume out! Well, new is relative, as it came out in 2024, but the original series ended in 2016. This collects some bonus chapters of them in college.

Finally finished this. The ending was satisfying and overall I enjoyed the series a lot.

There's nothing like getting up, grabbing the handful of pills you normally scarf down, and having one of the horse pill-sized vitamins get caught in your throat. There's that initial split second of "Oh, it'll go down when I swallow again" and then panic - and pain - as the damn thing doesn't go down.
Actually, painful doesn't even begin to describe it; agony is probably a better description. I kept trying to dissolve it with water, but it wasn't working. I was literally on my knees because of the pain. I woke up BB and between crying and gagging I managed to tell him what was wrong. He got up and did the Heimlich maneuver on me. It didn't shoot the pill out of my mouth, but it did move it just enough so that, about a minute later, I was able to cough, and the cough finally sent the thing stomach-ward.
Truly, for him to roll out of bed, bleary-eyed, and immediately know to do the maneuver, just reminds me that he is by far the most level-headed man I know.
As of tonight, my throat feels as if I've come down with something flu-like. I know my struggle to get the pill down my gullet caused some bleeding, since I had that coppery taste in my mouth that's unmistakable. With any luck, it will heal relatively quickly.
I'm never again taking all my morning pills at once. 😬
On the other hand, I finally put up the 19th and final chapter of "Gleaning Musutachi," the original novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo, of blessed memory, over on![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
originalkaffy_r . It's monumentally flawed, and wouldn't make it to anyone's slush pile, much less publication, but I didn't write it to get published. I wrote it because I wanted to complete something of novel length. I'm fond of the characters I created and, despite the flaws, the world I created pleases me. I also managed to keep the plot from completely disintegrating. Yay, me.
So pill pain, and something I could put up as a completed original novel. I love Fridays.

tangles and untangling

Review:
Riffenburgh is a mediocre technical writer, which makes for clumsy sentence construction and scene transitions. And while I can't fault his research, his agenda is weirdly obvious—he's a complicated and critical Shackleton stan, which nevertheless makes him a Wilson and Scott hater. But, structurally, this is well-balanced: Shackleton's reputation as the failure of the British National Antarctic Expedition vs. the image fostered in the rest of his career hinges at the Nimrod, so there's a lot of the Discovery but a willingness to skim later and better-known details of the Endurance.
As for Shackleton. 1) He reminds me of Borchgrevink of the Southern Cross, chasing fame, uninterested in science, not very good at planning; Shackleton's rapport with (select of) his men and aptitude for leadership sets him apart, but it's clear that public response to the Southern Cross vs. the Nimrod was fueled purely by British chauvinism. 2) He's insufferable! 3) The excess of close calls in the return journeys from both geographic and magnetic pole attempts further cements my opinion that trying to identify the exact causes of Scott's failure in 1912 is a situation of forest and trees, the problem more fundamental than any specifics: as soon as you start a man-hauling across the Antarctic, you are one unlucky run from death.
It's a janky read, but I'm grateful this exists; there's a regretful dearth of secondary sources about the not-big-name Antarctic expeditions. And oh, how I wish more of the journals had ever been published!

juushikaFirst five star within the first week of January; can't hate that. The fact that it also gets my favorite tag is also surely a coincidence and not indicative of the fact that I'm swayed by personal taste. Anyway, Of Thunder & Lightning was incredible. Still on a Silver Sprocket binge.

But it works surprisingly well, both to contrast the horror and when broken up by more painterly, dense panels. The brevity makes some of the stories feel gimmicky, but what playful, unsettling creativity! Standouts for me are the sensual "I Like to Squeeze into Tight Places," the more developed "Too Much on Your Plate," and the perfect simplicity of "At the End."

Feeling very knife-y today

Not stabby, exactly, but man, the news has just been unrelenting war, death, and aggression lately, and although things have been relatively calm where I live (compared to Minneapolis, Portland, or Chicago) I can’t help but feel like we’re next.
I had an Uber driver a couple of weeks ago — white guy, trucker hat, flannel shirt, came in a big SUV, and I really wasn’t sure if I should talk politics since he very well *might* have been a MAGA sort — but we’re not in the car two minutes before we passed a bumper sticker or a sign or something that made him say, “dang, I just don’t know what to do with this country… do you think we’re going to have to fend off an invasion by the National Guard?”
Turns out he only looks like a lumberjack: he’s got a PhD in political science. He was thinking of taking a course in field medicine first aid, figuring that would be the most useful thing he could do on the front lines. “I can’t believe I’m even talking about this,” he said. “But here we are.” I encouraged him to take the course. More healers can only be a good thing.
Speaking of which, a list of “things you can do besides protest or vote” is going around, and one of the suggestions is get trained in “PFA” which is “psychological first aid.” The Canadian Red Cross offers online courses, one in PFA self-care, and one in helping others. Red Cross/Red Crescent has a whole curriculum built around the recognition that mental health is crucial for any kind of help providers as well as those being helped.
I’m thinking of doing at least the self care course…? It’s only $20 (Canadian!).
