I'm getting behind in blogging. A late record of a few thoughts on Narnia.
* Other people seem to have covered most of it. Maybe just go read Ewan's or Chess's. Or have a fight between them. I'm not a very good noticer of special effects or music, so a lot of the problems there were completely lost on me. Overall I liked it quite a lot, though I know Angel and others were disappointed.
* The voices and appearances of the animals were all about as good as they could be. I was hesitant with the beavers' and the fox's voices, but decided to like them. Aslan's was odd, but hard to argue how. Too patronising? But the right sort of voice. The roar was a good roar. It didn't rock yoru socks as much as a real Aslan would, but I couldn't imagine much better in a cinema.
* Some of the effects were very well done. The dancing fire, and the turning to and back from stone would be so easy to mess up, but I thought looked really real.
* The film felt about the right pace to me, despite what everyone else said.
* I liked a lot of the minor characters. The bull, the centaur, the fox.
* I liked the main characters. I thought they were all a good representation (apart, possibly, from the ears). Personally, I loved Lucy. The funny bits were lovely, and she seemed real not precocious.
* The inserted action is a bit gratiutous, and annoying in places, but mostly well chosen. The main problem is it's not exciting if you know they get out ok because you know what happens next, but some people have the opposite problem. The battle was quite well chosen. Every clash brought them a bit closer to the conclusion, there wasn't the normal fight-you-know-doesn't-matter, like Ed smashing the wand. The witch with two swords was cool[1].
* At the start of the battle, I'm thinking "They have air superiority. Why aren't they using it?" and then they did. So thanks to people for being somewhat accurate! OTOH, Aslan never planned the battle with Peter, so where did any non-suicidal plans come from? First principles? The centaur? For the sake of argument I'll accept them practicing enough to be acceptable in battle, which is what they were.
* I see what people mean about soulless, but I can't explain why.
