Gakked from everyone. I didn't want to but:

(1) I wanted one post with screened comments. I never yet have. But if they're funny I might unscreen them, say if you want (or don't want) that.

(2) I want to know what everyone is saying. You want people for manual work such as cleaning or filing? How much does a cleaning service cost now? Is it that more worth it than hiring me out as a software consultant, sex slave, or organ doner, and paying someone else to clean? Or do you want only people you know in your house? Or is it cheating to hire someone to clean when you're not/no longer a cambridge student?

If you had me alone, locked up in your house for twenty-four hours and I had to do whatever you wanted me to, what would you have me do? All comments will be permanently screened because it's a secret. Then repost this in your LJ. You might be surprised with the responses you get.

Please unscreen this.

I want meme-posters to clean and tidy my house because I can order them around and make sure they do it properly, whereas a cleaning service I have to be polite to, am probably going to be too timid around to give decent orders, and they will be too timid around my stuff to put it in drawers and dump it in a 'you really don't need this' pile.

Also, I don't have the contacts to hire people out as something high-paying enough to make up for the hassle of trying to do it and the inconvenience to them, whereas making them clean is a low level of inconvenience to my friends (who have basically volunteered for potentially much worse things) for a high level of payoff for me.

Ah, yes. That does make a lot of sense. You're right.

In fact, even more so for filing, etc, becasue people you know are likely to understand what you need, and know what lecture notes matter, and hwo student loans work, and which friend's letters need replying, etc.

Also, I don't have the contacts to hire people out as something high-paying enough to make up for the hassle of trying to do it

You'd have it for free if we all volunteer :) Though admittedly you'd need a lot of people hours to make it worthwhile.

who have basically volunteered for potentially much worse things

Hmmm. Worse than cleaning? :)

Was it you who had a "You are in a bubble universe and can do anything you want. Would you?" meme?

What did we conclude? Mair's comment made that suddenly relevent.

It was a question in a quiz meme - 'if you were in a bubble universe, do you kill a human being when you have the chance (but no particular motive)'.

The properties of the bubble universe are differently important to different people, depending on how internalised their morality is and if having-done-something has consequences in their external morality after leaving the universe.

Bubble universes are very confusing. If you accept that they can be completely sealed from the set of external moral forces vaguely summarised by 'God finds out', then you have trouble combining this with 'I can remember what I did afterwards', which brings consequences out of the bubble - and if you can't remember what you did afterwards, in what sense did you do it at all?

My conclusion was 'without external moral imperatives and external pressures, I would in fact be an evil sadistic bastard and torture people to death for fun, because if it wasn't wrong / dangerous / difficult I would quite enjoy it'.

Yes, that was it. That really is a remarkably good litmus test for how internal people's morality is.

It comes up here, because -- is mair's choice subject to external moral pressures? Is she free merely of legal consequences of forcing me to do her will, or moral ones too? Bearing in mind I won't actually *do* it :)

you could modify the meme to say that your memory will be wiped immediately the 24 hours are up, so if I wanted to be evil and still get invited to your parties the next week, I could. that's kind of like taking advantage of people when they're drunk, except that your brain would still be functioning if I wanted it to be.

I'd still be nice though. Friends are more fun than cleaning ;-)

That could do it, depending what you might be restrained by. Would you not make me file if I'd help you after? Would you not make me install things if you'd feel guilty for making me miserable?

As I said in my other post, my first thought was, what would you do if I was guarenteed to be ok with it. But then, maybe you're a sadist :)

I think the question is, "Assuming as soon as we're in the same city we have an evening of catching up and pizza and mead, is there anything else you'd like on some level to have me do, even if it may be outweighed by some other restraint including, but not limited to, being able to, not feeling guilty for, and not being ostracised for?"

But the more you process the question, the less immediately interesting it becomes :)

*takes boring pen*
*scribbles all over mair*

But none of that made me think you were boring; your reply was sweet and probably truthful. I was just curious (a) if you thought my phrasing was the best way to describe the question I would ask people who might harbour eccentric ideas and (b) if you would admit to any :)

maybe I'd make you climb 10km up a mountain, and then laugh when we found ourselves 10km from home at 10pm, knackered (having climbed the mountain and had 3-4 hours sleep the night before) with no food and no coat and three empty water bottles and a puncture.

no wait, you said in my house?

but, well, I can picture a scenario, where you're agreeing to everything I suggest and don't seem to have any ideas of your own, then it seems like we might end up doing anything I might have thought would be fun to do with company but didn't think company would want to, and I can't think of anything like that at the moment but I'm sure other people could ;)

*stops over-analysing and admires the scribbles*

Ah, yes! Then good idea, we should, it'll be fun. It just sounded like you wanted me to suffer a *disasterous* mountainclimbing :)

And, ah! Now I see why all that was in your mind, if it happened.

Where *did* you go for easter? Was camping fun in the end?

(that happened on sunday. we kept wibbling and saying "which way shall we go?" and I kept saying "up!", and then we tried to cycle down on one brompton and there we were with a puncture ... )

True, that can be very annoying. You can take it in turns to suggest something, but don't want to suggest something the other person would really hate, and if you're both slightly shy end up doing something by default, or end up with one of you deciding.

Unless you're doing this meme, in which case you can pick whatever you fancy. Or, if you prefer, say "Jack. I want to go out and I don't know what I want to do. Can you take me out for the evening to something you think I'd enjoy?"

oh, and there are the things like going to church or the local barn dance society or whatever that maybe I wanted to do sometime but was too nervous to go to on my own ...

Ah, hm. That's a good idea too. I knew you'd work out some good use for me eventually, I'm glad I could help :)

For that matter, everyone seems to be sticking to the possible; if I could do *anything* with you maybe I'd like to turn you into an interstellar spaceship or something :)
