Apparently a small community in America discovered it was cheaper to hire one company to do garbage collection, rather than giving residents a choice of five companies, and also they would collect recycling.

Residents, incensed at this sudden monopoly, urgently urged the council to support four less-efficient companies at citizens expense.

They offered to pay more taxes to subsidize the status quo. One plucky resident offered to start her own garbage collection company, which would undercut the market leader. Others proposed the government simply get out of the garbage collecting business entirely. "It's my trash", said one man. "I'll take care of it myself, I don't need no economies of scale."

No, wait, they didn't do any of that. Instead they shouted about "socialism" a lot, and whined to the government to fix it. There are definitely problems with government permitted or supported monopolies. But since when is that a right wing nut talking point?
