Things one half of NTL might reasonably be expected to tell the other but didn't:

The office didn't tell the engineer we had had cable in the house before.
The engineer didn't tell the office he was running late.
The office didn't ask the engineer if he was running late (but told me they did when I rang them)
No-one told the engineer the NTL servers seemed to be down at the moment.
No-one told the engineer why you have to connect to the modem by ethernet OR usb but never both or what would happen if you tried.

However, we have a connection; hopefully when NTL get their end together we'll be able to register and actually have internet in the house!

That's the problem, he just said you couldn't. I got the impression that something dire might happen like NTL assuming that you were attempting to steal their bandwidth and canceling your account, but it could just be that you have to run the installation program twice and the engineer couldn't be bothered to explain that to me.

looks like it just "won't work" because NTL would need to give you two IPs. Can they tell the difference between trying to get two IPs by using two holes, and by hooking the modem straight into a switch/access point and trying to DHCP on from more than one machine?
