Torchwood

Introduction

I quite liked it. The whole introduction to Torchwood was rather by the numbers every cliche in introducing a secret agency possible. But then I liked the "The Bill" feel, how would it feel to discover these jokers in the middle of Cardiff? The stairways were kind of over the top :)

I quite enjoyed the first ep, though it felt a little slow sometimes. And the serial killer plot was totally shoe-horned in. It seems a bit of a waste and confusing to introduce half a dozen people and kill one, and have everyone else go through corruption and redemption in the same half-hour. We didn't know anything about her till the last second, and then she was dead already. And yeah, yeah, yeah, she was corrupted by the power, right, boring.

Humour/Gritty balance

I doubt it'll last, but this actually felt quite good. It was funny, but did no-one else find it grim when all those people died? The twat using the perfume was both funny ("Taxi!"), and very tawdry. The girl turning into a nympomaniac was funny, with the bouncers, and impressive when she's humping that bloke on prime time BBC -- but poof[1], he's dead. And then she changes out of the clubbing outfit, and it's suddenly close to home.

The same with the scale of the organisation. I don't expect they'll go long without saving the world, but so far it felt plausible, a fairly small organisation with some high-tech toys, blundering about learning, better than the last incarnation, but imperfectly. It feels like they might plausibly face challenges they'll overcome, rather than sucking the daleks out of every house on earth one day, then being unable to hunt down one welsh girl the next.

All just slightly small and tawdry. And the same with the attitudes. They fuck up because they're arrogant careless technomaniacs (but lovable), but it means they blunder from crisis to crisis, rather than recklessness being portrayed as unadulteratedly good.

Characters

Pretty good, I thought. It's really difficult to introduce lots of characters in a short time, but these were pretty well encapsulated by their *faces* before they even do anything. I don't know how it'll hold up, but there each seems interesting enough that the interactions could support seasons of series.

Jack. He felt a little older, wearier, but no less reckless or flirtatious. I quite like him, we'll see how it lasts. It's a hard act to follow when he already ran the gamut from lovable rogue to lovable martyr.

The twat. Sorry, I'm sure he had a real name. I thought he was pretty good. Instant hate, yes, but he does his job, and is just interesting enough to not be repulsive. And all of his jerkish attitudes -- stealing the tech, being callous to carys -- are really just what everyone else was thinking too.

The policewoman. Well, as I mentioned above, once you know the plot, you know exactly what character would be chosen here. But it's a nice one, so we'll see. Couldn't they have shown *anything* interesting about her boyfriend, though?

The chinese lady (and the others). Actually, I really fancied her when the aliens invaded london, I'm pleased to see her. We'll have to wait until they have some screen time.

Sexuality and bisexuality

Yay! Gratuitous, yes. But it breaks a mold. When was the last bisexual character you saw on TV, not for a joke? Here are SIX. Was it too in your face? Hell, there are plenty of shows where straight sex is the joke or the drama ever five minutes. It's over the top for every show to be like this, but to me, it felt natural, this is just how the characters are.

The entire series is going to be a poster boy for "Pah, your quaint little categories."

[1] No pun intended.

Were there actually six or metaphorically six? I wasn't counting (or metaphoring) ;)

Was it too in your face?

Face, no. Somewhere else, maybe. I'm not sure if it's my hormones, or I find it tantamount to soft porn ;)

What is metaphorically six? Do you mean because six sounds good? As it happened, I calculated most of the major characters were bi (most of them showed evidence, and that's what the rumour sites said).

And approximated how many there were, sure it was about six. Quick count: Gwen, Jack, Twat, Chink. I guess you have to count receptionist and clawgirl (or Carys) as well, which is cheating a bit, sorry.

ROFL, your hormones might be *why* :)
