Why are drinking games good? Because they add a competitive[1] edge to even simple games by giving you something to lose, but are inherently self-limiting by having no incentive to go on and try to win back what you lost :)

[1] Assuming you think a little competitive is fun.

Part of the have the aura of being competitive, but everybody gets to win. Some of the people are trying to get drunk, some are trying to stay sober, some are trying to flirt, some are trying to find out their friends' dirty secrets/confess dirty secrets of their own, some just want to make people do silly things. And it's easy to retrospectively change what you were trying to do, so that you can claim a victory whether you emerged horizontal or mostly-sober, and however much carnage there was on the way.

I went to boarding school and we used to spend our evenings playing fuzzy duck in our pyjamas. The first problem was that as a fuzzy duck playing 7 year old I didn't really understand the 'funny' implication of saying it incorrectly. Secondly, instead of drinking beer we would all sit round a pint glass full of water and when someone said it wrong they had to down the water. This meant that the game had to be broken up every 6 minutes as someone rushed through the dormitory, along the long corridor and into the communal bathrooms. The adult version makes so much more sense, but believe me - when you have to brave the bathrooms at night in the dark, the child's version really takes on a competative streak!
