Look at the FAQ which is itself quite amusing, and also the overview For instance:

Q. Can I write one word 50,000 times?
A. No. Well... No.

Several months ago, when I was dabbling with writing, someone said "You should do NaNoWriMo" but there were a couple of problems: (1) I was too lazy to write fast and (2) it wasn't november. Now, in a classic "two wrongs making a right" way, those two problems have solved each other.

I won't exactly, be participating because:

1. I plan to build on some stuff I've already done.
2. It's a collection of short stories which could, but would not necessarily, be considered one novel.
3. I probably won't hit 50,000 words.

But I figure nearly is better than nothing.

Who else considered it? Is anyone actually going ahead? (I can lend you an outline for one of the stories I won't get round to if anyone wants to stand on the shoulders of a man of average stature.)

Shortest summaries: Imagine if Michael Chrichton and Neal Stephenson collaberated to write Stargate but weren't very good.
Shorter summaries: (0) Graduate student Bernard Leporte discovers physics defining stargate-like device dubbed "leporte" but is betrayed by his supervisor Michel D'Aveux who presents it as his own work, convincing most of the international community, though Bernard is still hailed at home in Francer. (1) A prototype is being built supervised by D'Aveux in an American university jointly sponsored by the government, both universities and a large conglomorate. Despite cutting some corners they can connect to a life- or resource-rich planet, the first scientifically valuble, the second to D'Aveux's advantage as too prestigious a success would be taken over from him. An anonymous friend helps Bernard fake an emergency vote of the sponsors and go to the life planet. (2) When $scandal in D'Aveux's past is exposed he flees through the portal, discovered to have intellegent life (large iridescant humming birds symbiotic with strange tuber-plant impossibly energy efficient) now a haven for research. Birds forbid any search for him, even when he damages some of the plants they worship. It transpires that plants have biological fusion, and nearly free energy, causing birds to be almost entirely philanthropic, and Bernard by explaining this convinced them to reject it for D'Aveux. (4) Relatives of fusion plants (npi) form basis of cheap energy being imported in quantity, but when birds find out are horrified. Bernard has gone native and joins them in campaign to destroy the industry, while his wife attempts a diplomatic route, but eventually a compromise is reached.
Long version *tap* *tap* *tap* *tap* Wait a mo- nth...

Me. Currently at just over 3,200 words. It's dull and currently not going much of anywhere.

I've written all that today. Currently it is a dull story about some people who work for a fast-food place.

I considered and dismissed the idea within a couple of seconds, if that counts :) So much to write, so little time...
