Doctor Who
Jul. 2nd, 2007 03:08 pm* Yay, Captain Jack's back! Captain Jack's back!
* I really enjoyed these three episodes. I don't know if any of it really does bear rewatching after all, but I think these were as good as any of the others ever were.
* See, this was a finale done well.
* Stretched over three episodes, it feels like a natural climax of the series, rather than something extra tacked on.
* And back fitting with the rest of the series worked well. When it turns out the master had been living parallel with them on earth, you think "Ah! So THAT explains what the hell's been going on" and it all ties up well, rather than "OK, right, deus ex machina, but why does that involve writing bad wolf all over the universe? That's dumb."
* I like the Master! ("You're insane!"/[Big thumbs up!]) Although his bounciness still didn't feel right to me, I think I'd've rathered a Master with more gravitas.
* All three episodes were pretty.
* The paradox machine was cool (as reset buttons go). You can see all this is going to be reset, but it still feels important, and it's not just arbitrary, you can see why the master bent time, and why it caught up with him.
* OTOH, for the love of god, EVERY SINGLE TIME the doctor pulls a miracle out of his pocket at the twelfth hour. I did like the interplay! But, Master, shoot him *first*, preferably nine months ago, rather than whining about it and then looking shocked.
* The four-fluid gun is stupid. Bluffs only works if it's more silly than everything else, and the audience can say "ah!" If you just randomly assign twists between "real" and "bluff" the audience just stops trusting you.
* The year that never happened was done well. Though, *sigh*, I'm getting tired of deus ex machinas. Can we have something else now?
* Face of Bo! LOL! The reveal was a *little* extended, but it worked really well, because it's not *necessary*, but fits really well at both ends.
* And on reflection I still like Martha and her family. She's cool. Apparently she will return but not immediately.
* New assistant. OK, I stood by them as they had three assistants with a "thing" with the doctor... I thought it was interesting and moving. But if there's another assistant in love with the doctor, I'll have to agree they can't do anything else.
* They seem to be keeping this up, four episodes. They're not *really* good, I don't know how much I want to rewatch, but I want to see the episodes I missed. Time will tell.
* Other things were stupid, I can't be bothered to talk about them.

Date: 2007-07-03 08:16 am (UTC)I'm afraid M and I were in hysterics when the telepathic field kicked in and made the birdcage vanish, but I can forgive some daftness. I do think the best one was the Derek Jacobi episode, partly as it had the big revelation.

Hey, don't apologise to me, I find find things laughably implausible every five minutes -- the deus ex machines just blend in however ridiculous they are :)
