You may have heard me say they should make a film of Ursula K Le Guin's Earthsea[1]. I changed my mind. They shouldn't. Indeed, they shouldn't have.

GAH! Fuck. Well, I won't pass judgement until I've seen it, but Le Guin saying that is quite shocking.

[1] For those who don't know, Earthsea is one of the classic defining fantasy books, as evidenced by being, along with LOTR and HP[2], one of the very few mum likes. It's set on the Archipeligo, the vast cluster of islands the only land known. Ged comes from Gont, a goatherd, which surprisingly many wizards were, taught by a hedge-witch, saves his village from a raiding party, goes to Roke, the wizard isle, to study, being too arrogant for his own good gets into a dual and loses a 'shadow', which the archmage dies driving off. He perserveres, but has lost most of his confidence, and eventually gets his staff and moves away from Roke, but is then tracked down by the shadow. But he grows up, and in the second book is archmage, havign acquired the kind of calm his teacher had, but he disdained, but is still cool.

[2] I didn't say 'good', I said 'defining' :)

Oh, that's awful. I have deep, deep sympathy for her...that must REALLY hurt, having someone not only miss the point of your writing, but then proceed to butcher your efforts and start telling everyone else what the point was. Ouch.

Actually, I have an emotion bordering on empathy with her, as I have a feeling a similar butchery of one of my own fics is currently taking place...at least it's just fanfiction.

Well, the good news is that I can't imagine believing a claim like the producer made even if I hadn't read the book. The bad news is that, according to the message board I came across this on, Roke had been altered noticeably more like Hogwarts. AAAAAAAAAGGHH!

Who is butchering your fic?

Oh, a 'fan', so to speak, who is working on a prequel to my Blood, Sweat and Tears. She means well, but I think she has missed the point; BST was a kind of tragic story about desperate, hurting people in horrible times, and the preqel seems to be more about Fingon's phyisical inabolity to tolerate anal sex and Maedhros's schizoid personality...and I'm slightly worried. I am going to hope, but I am scared! *falls on top of you weeping pitifully*

Squee! Enigroupies! When do I get groupies? Uh, sorry. *hug* *hughughug* There, there. That is... unfortunate. But look on the bright side: people probably won't know your work mainly through hers, and you can put a disclaimer up saying "it's a great work, but it doesn't represent my world per se" Though it still must be really, really annoying.
