Warning, genuine spoilers ahead. Not for the plot particularly, but about several humorous or moving bits which you'll probably get less benefit from if you read this first.

The whole Peer and Dappa silver-backed gorilla conversation was hilarious. It had me in stitches for several pages. "I think you should *not* throw faeces at Eliza" "And pick those nits out of your hair" "Before you ask, that was a 10."

At the end, when the philosopher's stone was revealed. It really excited me to see that in this world, there *were* some inexplicable things.

And I'm glad we got to find out something about Enoch. I do like him. But now I wonder if Stephenson will get round to writing the corresponding books to Cryptonomicon and Baroque Cycle set in the future, and if we'll learn any more about if Enoch has any particular big plan, or is just doing good where he can. And if he's considered doing a Flamel, considering he seemed inclined to supress the secret in System.

Also, how long such a series would be; probably 9 books of 10,000 pages each at this rate, and Neal will die before finishing...

On the whole, it was my favorite of the trilogy[1]. Or maybe it's just that I'd got more into it. While the plot made no more sense than the last two, every scene was gripping, and I didn't end up constantly feeling at sea in an ocean of people with five different titles being referred to obliquely without characterisation...

[1] On the subject of trilogies, I saw an advert for "Earthsea quadrilogy" *sob*
