My weekend

Friday: satanicsocks's birthday. Bangkok city is great. It was nice to see people again, especially Ashliegh and Mark who I haven't seen for *ages*. Filecoreinuse tortured satanicsocks all night by not telling her what he had to give to me (one of the cables pete didn't need and I said I might as well use).

Friday: general dancing. I'm getting in shape for the ball, sort of. I just got there for the last twenty minutes, but there were some people I remembered from when I used to go, including some I thought had quit dancing, or cambridge, or both.

Sat: shopping. I tried to get into town in time to buy a bike, but only had time for a quick look. But at least I've got a benchmark of what's available.

Sat: poohsoc. TCS *did* send a reporter to spy on us. The review was quite complimentary (I could see it potentially attracting people, which is good), but we're very uncomfortable with the 'spying' method of research. On the other hand, exactly how else are they supposed to do it? Surely going along as a new member is the only way to get a feel of what it'd like to be a new member, though you have to take into account that what *you* might not like, someone else *might*.

Sat: Tim's. Justin couldn't make it, which gave Tim and me1 a chance to catch up on the conversations which we have in common but Justin doesn't, and had a pleasant quiet evening making fun of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. (Q: what is the next prime after 23. Surely, anyone over 16 is *leghally requried* to know that :))

Sat: WHY IS TESCO'S ALWAYS SHUT? Surely more people want to shop sat night than all other nights put together?!

Sun: An actual lie in (as in, having more than necessary sleep, not just sleeping late.) Though it didn't stop me being tired this morning. But i slept nearly 12 hours (woo!) and was just woken up but not got up when...

Sun: Justin visited (see above mod (T,J)) and we played Total Annihilation which he won by nuking me while I was saying things like "How do I steer?" and "Oh, I can shoot back!" though I didn't do *so* badly and wouldn't mind playing again.

Sun: Coffee with bachlover, who's lovely. And we had dinner at Trinity, which was ever so nostalgic.

Sun: CUSFS politics discussion. A small amount of politics. And a lot of meeting again people I've seen around (Simeon, Dan...) and exchanging maths jokes.

I was also introduced to two new memes. One is the 20-questions variant they favor, called "Concrete, Absrtact or Squiggy", at which it took us absolutely *ages* to guess Matthew's "April". The list of previously guessed topics is intimidating including things like "The reflection in the eyes of a yeti on everest of Dan's computer displaying..." and "Shrodinger's Equation" (Is it related to foo? Yes.) and other weirder ones I can't remember.

The other is like a death circus.

Sun: I hoped to finish Saldini and show people today, but I haven't had a free moment all weekend, and sunday night I went to bed. Maybe tonight.

[1] Edited for grammar. Thanks, Pippa.

29?

I'll be at the ball too! I'm so glad there'll be someone there I know...

And you never did tell us who sonicdrift is...

Yes, though I'm worried you felt it necessary to ask :)

Likewise :)

OK, sorry about that. Alison.

Alison poohsoc, or Alison Kiddle?

Alison poohsoc :) I don't know that I know Alison Kiddle.

Alison Kiddle was in the year above you at Trinity, and hung around with Iain Gunn, Tom, John etc...

Ah, Alison. I wondered if that was who you meant, but I don't think I ever learnt her surname. She was a confirming instance of my belief that all Alisons are (1) mathmo-y (2) pretty (3) dancers :)

Jack! Schrodinger has a 'c'! (Or am I missing some subtle techie thing, in which case I apologise and am embarrassed)

*tries desperately to think of a joke based around that mispelling I can pretend you missed*

No, I just typo'd. I do that a lot :(

Sorry sweetie. *puts on apologetic face* Though I guess you didn't spend 2 of the last 3 years doing theoretical physics, so it's just appalling as opposed to blasphemous ;)

Speaking of 'puppy dog eyes', I have a very strict quota on how often people can call me 'sweetie' :)

Though if I did, I'd probably always write ScEq or something, and still not be able to spell it. *thinks* I was going to say 'at least I remember what it *is*' but I'm not sure I do :( Though I could probably pick it out of a line up, so to speak.

Wow. It's the wave eqn, but would be far too messy to write w/out using symbols, which is far too tedious. It's all about differentials and energy.

As for the sweetie thing, what are you going to do, hunt me down? Or stop being my beta? *thinks again and whimpers* Any other words I can sub in - honey maybe? You've been spending too much time with Tim :(

You can approximate maths in text if you do it in moderation. ih/2pi * d/dt (something greek) = d/d(something else) something greek. All 'd's are always curly.

*thinks again and whimpers*

Mwahahaha! Obey me! No, in moderation is fine, but it'd be good if you can vary the drawling "endearments" :)

Besides, Tim has R now, it's so sweet :)

Aw, do they have pet names for each other? I know I should find it sweet, but at the moment I'm just amused ;) The love of a good woman and all that

Aw, do they have pet names for each other?

Well, no, actually. Or at least not in public. But it's sweet for a geek :)

Damn, I thought Tim had softened up. Shucks. But yeah, they seem like a cute couple whenever I see them.

Is Justin still going out with Tatiana?

From: [identity profile] cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com
I thought you hadn't seen each other for about a year...?

Is Justin still going out with Tatiana?

Yes. Though they're very non-demonstrative in public so there's not much in the way of pet[1] names there either.

[1] I mean "pet names", not "'pet' names". "pet" wouldn't count because everyone uses it of everyone.

Don't worry, I got it. Are they engaged yet?

With anyone else that question would seem premature, but with Justin...

Date: 2005-03-08 02:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com
They've been together for a couple of years, so I don't think that's premature any more if you decide you should. IIRC they've thought about it, but haven't yet.

I didn't mean to suggest that you might *not* have got it, I just explained it because I thought the explanation was funny.

Doors 1, 3, and 10, where 10 is constant over time? Crap, I don't remember anything. Why do I get the feeling that the Schrodinger equation I find opening a door should be cat shaped?

now that woulda been cool. I should have done that. cos I didn't waste enough time already ;)

not bad, but I *think* you missed one.

Miaow.

2. I was expecting only one of them to be the Schrodinger equation, so I spent ages comparing them and checking I hadn't missed some little difference, and when I got to three of them I stopped looking in case I thought they *all* were and I felt the universe had gone mad...

which gave Tim and I a chance to catch up

Now, you know I hate to be a linguistic pedant ;) but can I just say "Grrrrrrrr".

:)

Oh no, does one really need to be able to dance for Balls?

Date: 2005-03-07 06:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com
The dancing ball. Which is great, everyone should go! I think May Balls should have more (or any) dancing, but in fact they're very minimal in my limited experience.

Date: 2005-03-07 06:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rochvelleth.livejournal.com
Ah, I see :) But I always feel I should be able to dance formally for any big occasion.

Date: 2005-03-08 11:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com
Well, it's always *good*. For that matter, you never know when dancing will happen impromptuly. But you don't have to be embarassed if you haven't been taught.

For that matter, if you can sway but are embarassed about walzing I can probably teach you enough to get by next time I see you :)

Argh. Dancing Ball. That thing I was going to occasionally turn up to GD to remind me how to dance for so I could go to but didn't. Have they sold out yet?

Thanks for letting people know who I am by the way, I meant to tell atreic ages ago.

Date: 2005-03-07 09:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] atreic.livejournal.com
Ooh, do come! I'll be there, and I won't know anyone now I'm old. I don't know if it's sold out yet, there were a few tickets left last time the committee emailed us...

Date: 2005-03-07 11:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sonicdrift.livejournal.com
Ah, yes I must have got taken of the email list when I never got round to renewing my membership, hence forgetting about it completely. Why is it the societies I'm interested in prune their email lists while I'm still getting spam from random things I signed up to at the freshers fayre 4 years ago?

I'll see if there are any left.

Date: 2005-03-08 11:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com
If you find it difficult to get to a CDC event[1], last term when I emailed the committee they said they would reserve a ticket if I sent them a cheque, though I don't know how that interacts with tickets potentially running out.

[1] FAO grammar pedants, you know who you are. I know the implied "you should be aware that" between "if foo" and "bar blah" construction doesn't *technically* make sense, (even if, by naive logic, it's technically a truism), but I've been unable to get anyone to suggest a better way of saying it, so I'm sticking to that one.
