I liked it very much. I remember a one-off episode for some comic relief night or something, that seemed exceptionally insipid, but this was ok. The Doctor had a lovely edge of irreverence and impulsiveness, while still tinged with a shade of ruthlessness. I expected to hate Billy Piper, but didn't.
I can't remember all the lines, but I laughed out loud several times ("Lots of planets have a north, you know."). I was never scared, but I think the autons were as good a villain as you could expect. And poor clive! Maybe they should spend a few episodes in the same place, since 45min is barely enough to save a whole world :) but I'll see how it goes.
It's funny, because I never really saw the original series except some repeats, and it never really was part of my formative years :) But I was impressed by a few of the novels; I can't remember exactly how canonical they were, but some of the thicker ones were really spooky, and did a wonderful job of portraying the doctor as nice and funny and selfless but also always in the business of killing millions to save billions and abusing his companions feelings and hatching great machiavellian plots that did really move me.
Finally, as hinted before, I'll probably be watching and hopefully also taping the rest of the series, and would enjoy hosting Dr Who watching parties if anyone wants to visit.
