Well, pure mathmos seem to like puns more. If you applied mathmos thought up fluid dynamics puns *we'd* be out in the cold.

What's disturbing is the ones that seem to be phd-level. Who *gets* those? :)

Well, yeah.

What I was actually going for but didn't express well is things like the 'arf, arf' joke require a knowledge of knot theory that I was never officially taught, and yet everyone seems to pick up from somewhere. It requires either mathematically knowlegably laymen, maths-joke-loving laymen, or phd students with a sense of humour, not of which are common :)
