A dimension exists parallel to ours where matter and spacetime can be influenced by certain thought and symbols, called Flux. The right spells on our side can cause it to breach through, making an area in our universe where the natural laws become like those in flux, which correctly used can be like magic. Someone discovered a ritual with pentagrams, blood, candles and chants that could cause it, and several different effects he could make that cause -- eg. levitation, telepathy, pyro/telekenesis. Or most easily to detect other magics. A more determined caster, or more casters, or a larger diagram, or more accurately positioned marks in the diagram, or more satellite supporting diagrams can make a more accurate and powerful spell. It is possible to make a spell in minutes, but it will either be very weak or unpredictable. Or a sorcerer could calculate for a year and yet still not have perfected it.

However, there it can be used in two particular and persistent ways. Some flux can be infused into a person making him permanently able to use some magic effects, though he deteriorates; or the air, making a genie; or an object, making a talisman; or a statue making a golem; or an animal, making a familiar; in all cases having some magic effect without ritual or with different ritual.

Also repeated use of related spells, or major spells, form things in the flux, specifically intellegences aka demons. Depending on the subconscious thoughts and intentions of people involved and some chance, these may be like angels or demons or something else. They're not able to affect anything much unless a spell goes wrong, except perhaps to give advice on how to, eg, cast spells.

There are very few times this has been put into practice. There are records of only one, and the sorcerer's notes haven't been found. He did experiments which confirmed an amount of this theory, though it's unknown if he deduced it himself or was working from an older source. He conceived that imbuing flux into a recent corpse could resurrect it and indeed give it immortality. He never tried it until his unrequited love died, and he decided bringing her back would win her love. But despite spilling pints of his blood into it his spell wasn't perfect, and acheived a form of resurrection and immortality and love in a tragicly twisted way -- his would be love rose from her coffin with an unquenshable thirst for blood and a desire to share her immortality with him, and fell upon his: she was the first vampire.

CB learns of this and attempts to perfect the original spell, but is led astray by the demon created by it, who seeks to be incarnated as a demon in this world. All vampires have a sliver of flux in them, on which lives the persistent remains of the original spell that gives a vampire specific and fixed supernatural abilities and flaws. CB's abortive attempt created a reventant, a vampire wih more extensive flux, which slowly warps matter near it according to its and other people's subconcious expectations and general entropy. For instance, electronics and machinary slowly fuse, and with multiple revenants random effects like walls melting and shadows coming alive can happen.

Brilliant! And such a cop-out! ;)

Erm, I'm glad I could help, even if I did very little...

LOL.

You did help. Mum and I do it all the time: a dummy of the other would be enough, because it's in explaining that understanding comes.

And I was forgetting this story is supposed to be funny :)
