Angel starts off drawing a lot from the noir detective genre. But unfortunately, it never really gets it right, and retreats back into fantasy with teenage soap-opera, which it does really, really well. But I always somewhat miss what it might have been but wasn't. The episodes where they actually do something vaguely detective-agency-y have interesting premises, but then they sort of drop the theme and meet monsters of the week randomly.

For instance, Doyle had a crush on Cordelia, but still seemed like someone who'd had some life experience, rather than someone who's only mode of life was "unrequited crush".

Likewise, some of the later plot with Wolfram and Hart is very good, but at this point I'd had the idea that they might be a lot creepier if they truly were evil people who facilitated monsters while sensibly staying out of the limelight, rather than an arbitrary villainous agency who end up in "use a prophecy as a lame excuse for switching between malevolent and overly complicated every week".
