I've no idea if those figures have just been completely made up (though people at pizza said they sounded "about right"). But it's an important reminder that all things have risks, and stuff with less risks than what we do now is probably a good move, even if there's not a cast iron guarantee that it's completely risk-free in every way, and you'd prefer to transition to something even better in the long run.

(I don't know if they included "all the deaths in the iraq war" and "all the people who will die if global warming turns the earth into a giant cinder", but I assume not.)

Coal mining remains very hazardous, well over 1000 deaths per year in Chinese coal mines alone. I'm surprised coal/oil were lumped together there; coal extraction is much more dangerous than oil extraction - perhaps the focus is more on the risks from climate change and its attendant effects.

Oh, sorry, no, I lumped them together; since I wasn't confident of the numbers, I just picked a value somewhere between "Western coal extraction" (safest) and "Chinese coal extraction" (least safe). "Average coal extraction" and "oil" were somewhere in the middle.

So that wasn't very representative of me, but I honeslty thought "about a 1000 times worse" was specific enough, and if people wanted to know specifically between 500 times worse and 4000 times worse, they'd do better to look up the figures themselves than count my skulls...
