Last week I went along to the magic draft at the board games shop. I've played casually for years now, but never went along to any of the competitions, even the most casual ones, apart from the release events.
I was glad I did, it was very fun, and it's always good to socialise with new people, wheever it is.
I came second of eight. I think we were all comparable, but my deck was average-ish, but a bit more solid than the first two players, and a bit less solid than James'.
I started with an Adaptive Automotan, which was more useful than I'd realised: I'd hoped to draft a lot of a single creature type (probably humans or zombies) although I expected this to be a disaster. However, what I ended up with was three Elvish Archdruids in addition, plus a few other elves. Which was not enough to be ideal, but combined with some other midrange green creatures, was not a bad middle of the deck. I ended up with mostly green, with a couple of big wurms, and splashed for oblivion ring and gideon jura (which is awesome). I also had a big black demon because I wasn't sure which color I'd end up splashing, but the white was better and I couldn't do both.
The first two rounds I won 2-0 each, generally due to a pile of 3/3 elves, or to gideon jura. Round three I lost 2-0. Each game didn't start off badly, but James outdid me on medium creatures and flyers, and had several counterspells for Gideon Jura.
The funniest moment was playing Adaptive Automaton naming "crocodile": I only have one, but making my bloodthirst islandwalk creature up to 4/4 was well worth it, or so I infer from the pacifism it drew :)
