Toner cartridges

I bought a laser printer from staples. The shop assistant, who seemed fairly competent, told me I would need to buy toner cartridges separately, which I did. I know ink/toner is massively more expensive than printers (and much more expensive if you don't go looking on the internet), although I'd thought the discrepency is less with laser printers than inkjet printers, and I went ahead and did so.
Now, I printed out ~400 pages of scripts (almost all B&W) for buffycamp with the cartridges that already came with the printer, and the status shows all the color cartridges about 80% full and the black cartridge about 60% full.
Should I:
* Assume the cartridges will imminently run out and I will need to replace them?
* Assume I will need replacement cartridges eventually?
* Assume I was completely mistaken to buy cartridges as well, but there's no point trying to return them?
* Assume I was completely mistaken to buy cartridges as well, and I should at least ask if I can return them?
