I didn't want to think about it before, but following Liv's excellent example last year, I want to join a gym in Cambridge. I know a couple of you have, where did you join? Are you happy with it?

I also want to get Liv some home weights for xmas. Cardio exercise is probably more important, but that probably wants more variety, but if she continues to go to the gym, she can do some weights on other days, and do more cardio when she's in the gym. Does that make sense?

And does anyone have any experience or suggestions for what to buy?

Suggest finding out who is the trainer she works with at the gym...maybe via mathcathy...and asking them what'd be best.

I go to Greens (http://www.greensonline.co.uk/club_cambridge/index.php) who are very expensive but also very nice (has a lovely pool). I can get you in as a guest for a very small amount of money (or maybe free, depending on if they are feeling like handing out free guest passes) if you want to try it.

(ETA - I can probably parlay "my friend joined" into free money for me; but this is not why I'm telling you they are a good gym, I'm doing that because I go a lot and know they are a good gym)

If there is a Total Fitness in Cambridge and if it's convenient for you, then I think we can get reciprocal membership in eachother's gyms. That is we could go and work out together when we're visiting eachother. It's not a major consideration but if everything else is equal, might be worth it. I don't know how similar they are between branches but the TF here I'm very happy with. They're somewhere in the mid range price wise, but membership includes most classes, personal training sessions etc, whereas many cheaper gyms you have to pay extra if you want to do anything beyond turn up and use the machines. I'm paying £35 pcm, dunno if prices are the same in different regions.

I highly recommend the one at Addenbrooke's but it might be a bit out of your way :-)
