Dear wikipedia, when you say that towards the end of the film, one of the major themes is given physical manifestation when one of the main characters, surprisingly, literally transforms into a car: you probably don't need "literally", and you probably shouldn't have to need a footnote citation supporting the word "surprisingly"! :)

(Spoilers in comments)

Have you been watching Utena by any chance? :-)

Only up to the point where people start turning into cars, beyond that it's anyone's guess. Do watch the series, it is utterly amazing and makes a lot more sense. The film is kind of a precis that goes off on a random tangent; it's as if someone drunk and distractable were trying to describe the series to you. The series is way more subtle in that the subtext is actually subtext, and there's some odd stuff in the film which changes the interpretation quite a lot (e.g. in the film there are strong hints that some of the characters are dead, and Utena has a previous relationship with Touga which is very different to that in the series).

There are also lots of cars in the series, but by comparison they're mush less odd. :-)

(Disclaimer: 100% sense may not be achievable in this universe)

Oh, also, if you do watch the series, don't be tempted to skip the recap episodes, they're all worth it.
