Good premise. Interesting moments. Inside of a sun.

But many annoying things. The doctor can only casually threaten people with deadly force so many times before it stops being edgy and starts being inconsistent. So many good ideas, but so many introduced arbitrarily. "Lets start an arbitrary countdown" "Lets turn all the shields off"

To be fair, the the doctor's extreme optimism and impulsiveness _will_ produce problems like this.

And this isn't a major problem, more of a philosophical one, but why do we care so much who the doctor used to be? We know who he is now, who he wants to be. He doesn't seem to have any problems with his past. It doesn't seem to be something he wants to talk about. So why not just let him have his privacy?

He probably did something really bad in the past and has been trying to make amends ever since. Clara is obviously a pawn in the conspiracy of screen writers to lead us to the question that must not be asked.

I watched the first Martha Jones episode the other day, it happened to be on. In that, the Doctor fiddled with a hospital x-ray machine to increase the dose and pointed it at something to kill it. Of course, it was never shown that humanoid thing was a life form and not a robot.
