Splashy Mill

For our anniversary, Rachel and I went away for a short weekend to a self-catering cottage near Stoke. It had its own millwheel which actually turned! It was really lovely.
Rachel has been coming to Cambridge by default, so it's been quite a while since I've driven to Stoke. A lot of the work on the A14 has finished. No more long stretches of narrow lanes. A few places with a third lane for merging on/off. The M6/M1/A14 junction, you can go in multiple directions without coming off the main road, through traffic lights, under a narrow bridge, round a roundabout, and needing to merge across all the traffic going in other directions. It would be nicer to NOT have to drive, but that was definitely nicer.
I also experimented with going west along the A428 and rejoining the A14 via the A1. It seems like, that's 15 minutes longer, but not prone to ALWAYS have a traffic jam. Is it actually more sensible to do that by default?
