Review - Constant Gardener
Nov. 27th, 2005 10:27 pmToday Becky took us -- Pete, pseudomonas, alison, later mobbsy, kitsunenine, clive, lizzy, and chris(?) -- walking across the incongruously-in-the-middle-of-cambridge mini wood and fields, along the disused railway to trumpington, skipped seeing Byron's Pool, also skipped seeing horsies, for quite nice food in Grantchester.
After several of us went to the cinema. We wanted to seeLibertine Johnny Depp, but it apparently wasn't on, and we tried Constant Gardener.
I quite liked it, despite not really being my normal sort of film. I loved all the characters (though found it difficult not to see Bill Nighy as the guy in Love Actually.)
I found it slightly confusing to know what was actually going on, but not really. There was never that much doubt -- pharmecutical companies are always the bad guy, via the government -- but all the time I was kept curious as to something: *would* Justin be a good guy? What did it have to do with weedkiller? Were the entire service involved or just some of them? Who would die?
(Conversely, some things obviously weren't. If Tessa was having an affair or not, somehow just didn't seem to matter. And the violence -- you're fairly sure he'll last till the end of the film.)
The others (except Becky) were mainly really bored though. Nor could I explain why I enjoyed the film. Maybe I was just in the mood to appreciate something unfolding elegantly even if it wasn't very exciting.
