Yes, but it was named after some sort of north american mammal[1].

[1] Tedious and possibly insulting explanation: three reasons (a) the uni what did it had a gopher mascot (b) it works on some sort of cross links likened to interconnected gopher tunnels (c) it fetches data, aka to 'go for' it -- gopher also describes a person who's job is such administrative tasks.
