Went to the carlton. Chatted to Mark about Gruntz (anyone recommend another Mary Gentle book to try?), met a cuddly ghoti and talked about nanowrimo, ignored emperor and fanf talking about tech.

Then I got kidnapped by [livejournal.com profile] calamarain and friends ("Oh, you're [livejournal.com profile] kitsunenine") and forced to play Munchkin, which was very good. I still need to dither less and pay attention to classes and races. but with most of the others I was at 9 levels for most of the endgame.

It was also very amusing because they had some brand spanking new custom cards like the Hairy Buttocks and GM's Girlfriend, which seemed to fit quite well.

This meant I didn't get much nano done. However, I had my usual idea (insert a narrator), so we'll see if that gets it going better tonight.

Update: And we also had the moment when [livejournal.com profile] gerald_duck and I stare at each other and go "How do you know these people?" :)

Firstly, I've not heard of Gruntz, but I did see a book in Borders (um, around the esses in Sci-Fi, near Paperchase) called "Orcs" which seems a similar concept after Amazoning the former.

Mary Gentle books I like: Ash - A Secret History. I can't get into the Chronicles of Orthe or 1610.

Thank you.

Yes. They both had a very interesting premise, and Grunts was a bit love/hate... I loved the concept, and it had good ideas, and was funny in places, and had decent characters, but it couldn't make up its mind whether we were sympathising or just laughing or what. Orcs was more of a real plot, but I just got bored half way and promised myself I'd never finish it.

I also liked Ash and didn't get on with Orthe. I haven't read 1610, but I have read the first of the White Crow books, which I didn't get on with either. I'm currently working on the theory that Ash is the only Mary Gentle I actually like :-)

The weird thing is I really, really enjoyed Ash, and really can't start enjoying the others. It has all my favourite elements, history, strong woman fighter character, medieval blood and guts, and takes a week to finish... I've lost my copy, though!

Maybe "Ash" is the only one *anyone* likes. No, wait, Mark liked something else.

Doh! I don't normally bother with lj-user tags, I saw the link and thought it was ok.

maybe LJ should check it when you post lj-user="" things...

Glad you enjoyed it. I think we had all the custom cards out, with the exception of the Pork Sword. It's a great game :)

It was nice to see you. The extras seem to fit pretty well -- should I ask what the pork sword does, other than provide an opportunity for a lot of 'sheathing' innuendo?
