Saturday

I never did get to the beer festival. I prefer summer anyway, winter is so crowded and hot, ironically. I met Risa and AJ and satanicsocks and friends in the Maypole (cocktaisl!) and caught up on old times a bit and got to go "Awwww!" :) And then went to relativity afterwards, when I had to put my innuendo engine into reverse, and spot statements that could plausibly be interpreted as *not* refering to bondage or mathematics :)

Firefly

Well, it's hard to list episodes that aren't my favorite, but Mrs Reynolds and Janyetown have to be two of the funniest, conveniently right next to each other.

I cooked, um, something with vegemince, onions, mushrooms, etc, and rice, with a few bits on the side. Something between bolognese and stew? Curry without the meat or the curry? How would you describe that? Anyway, it was quite nice. It was the first time I did that exactly, and I'm glad it was ok. Though I thought it could have done with some change, I'm not sure what -- maybe tomatoes? Certainly more spices for me :) Different veg? While the others didn't have any suggestion.

Scratch

I have a short vertical scratch on my forehead. And no idea why. I'm not sure if I knocked it against something when I was concentrating on something else and didn't notice, or scratched it with a fingernail while asleep, or kicked in the head and had my nuclear wessels stolen while I had amnesia, or was kidnapped by aliens and a spore put into my brain.

Bike

On sat I put the bike back together, and it's cyclable, but there was still something wrong. AJ nailed it first thing -- the wheel wobbles; peddling hard tilts it and rubs it on the frame.

Cat

Apparently our street's little wandering friend was hit by a car, I don't think he's coming back :(

oh! my old bike did that. We never fixed it. Or maybe we did and something else went wrong.

Aw. I hoped you'd say

Flurble: everything in my bike is wrong except wheel-rubbing
CDaemon: Oh!
Flurble: tell you what, I'll lend you the non-rubbingness to attach to your bike.
CDaemon: Thank you!

It comes to something when surreality is so normal that the sane answer has surprise value ;)

Well, I was only half-right - I said it would be rubbing against the brakes. If I'd been fully-right, then the solution would have been easy. Sadly, I think you need a new gear assembly (which might have to come pre-integrated with a new wheel, in my experience) now that the wobble has become this bad.

Dammit, all problems should be fixable with strength of will and duct tape :(

I'm happy to give you the credit, your guess had all the relevent information in.

Wha? You should be able to buy new gears without a whole new wheel, whether it's hub gears, cassette or freewheel (I can't remember what it is, but the bike isn't old enough for it to be a freewheel). Regardless, I still don't see what the gears could have to do with the wheel wobbling?

[livejournal.com profile] cartesiandaemon, if it's just that the wheel has gone off true, I could have a go at straightening it if you like. It shouldn't be too much hassle if the rim is still in a vaguely reasonable state. (I've built my own wheels in the past, including the rear wheel I'm riding on at the moment, and have a truing stand and stuff).

Thank you! I need to have a closer look at it, but it would be good to ask for your opinion at some point.

I didn't imagine it would be a situation in which the wheel / frame connection was loose for something this severe - the wheel ought to have fallen off by now if it was. From my own experience with a very similar situation, the wheel will be wobbling around the front / rear axis relative to the gears - I *think* this is a problem with the bearings or related parts, which couple the wheel and the gearing together.

re: new wheel/gear assembly, you're right, depending on how much work you want to do. In my situation, I didn't want to have to do messy work myself, and both professionals I took it to (and ended up picking the cheaper of the two) told me it would be less cost overall to replace the whole combined wheel and gear assembly.
