Golden Hind
Jan. 31st, 2006 01:39 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I'm sitting at the traffic lights, at the top of greenend road just inside -- that is, closer to the kerb than, rather than contained within the smaller partition defined by -- a jeep thing. My back wheel is a bit loose, but hence centred, and has stopped rubbing! And while I was at it my gears are aligned so '1', '2' and '3' match up to 'low', 'med' and 'high', instead of '1 and hold it down', '2, provided you move to it upward' and '2 or 3' -- which is about how it came back from the first service.
Oops, I'm spodding when I should be watching the light. Why is it so easy to miss colour change? Maybe it should flash or something to draw attention -- we *so* *are* frogs (notice, the use of λ.x->*x* rather than -><i>x</i> allowing the separate emphasis of adjacent words [look, multinesting -- I wonder what the circumference is?]) -- except that flashing would be distracting.
There it goes. Start on amber, and away before the jeep. My bike using[1] to be delicate makes me aware of leaning into curves on it, and I wonder how far I could go. The jeep is still tailing me, but not turning left, nor mashing me into the traffic island. I curve out slightly to give it a bit of space so I can accelerate without ploughing into it. I normally ride straight onto the cycle lane as no-one is on the pavement, but I'm puzzled by this one.
[1] Does that make sense? Should I just say 'being'? But "used to" is a verb, cannot I gerund[2] it?
[2] Maybe we should have an official suffix for verbaning nouns, so it doesn't painaning[3] as much.
[3] Which came first? Pain (v) or pain (n)? I'm OEDless.
[4][5] *thinks* I'll leave these here rather than at the bottom of the post. They're as readable as the text.
[5] Does anyone else read footnotes not just when seeing the original? For instance, orphananed ones? But sometimes it *does* make sense. Like here,
I remember Hope Hubris doing this in Piers Anthony's Tyrant of Jupiter series. Now, I'm embarassed to have liked them, though they obviously did some things right, because at the time I liked them, which is a measure of a book's goodness, damnit. Maybe that's it with Da Vinci code -- if I'd read it at 13 I would have loved it, and still forgiven its flaws now, but as I didn't, it riles me. But many -- maybe most -- books I love, and then later see *why* and sometimes cringe. Perhaps it happens when I book carries you along with wonderful writing, but little overall plan, though I can't tell which planlessnesses annoy me and which don't.
What did he? Oh yes. Go off into long monologues in the middle of action. Then I thought it was very literary, like the Pit and Pendulum or something -- and so me. Also, perhaps, *then* *Hope* -- look, *x* again -- was 15, and so his thinking was correct to have been sophomoric, if interesting, but in later books it grates. Ditto sex.
The golden hind is on the ahead right. I've only been there a couple of times, when someone's visited, and we've wanted the nearest pub with no pretentions of being a regular, with a pool table. And I've only just realised how Golden Hind could be as suggestive as Spread Eagle to the right mind. Going to the right leads to Tescos. No-where does Quorn but supermarkets, but absorbing mushrooms, onions, salsa, and spices, it does make a good sauce. I've been making extra and storing it -- yay, my plastic salad bowls and cling film, mmm, cling film though once it's made it's hard not to eat it :)
Maybe this introspection is why my roleplaying can bog down :) Must do that again. And all my fic characters, even the impulsive ones, seem to do introspection and irony "Illian did irony better, but you had to give Haroche credit for trying." But hey, it's a style. I'll try to tone it down. And being mostly on top of stuff -- get your minds out of the gutter, not of anyone at the moment, except metaphorically insofar as I have bitches, which I tend not to -- I could do some more writing this evening. And maybe get some beta-action.
I scoot onto the pavement and away, but somehow[1] know to glance back, and the jeep is sedately turning into the drive on the corner behind me. They could have cut me off, but going an extra two mph across 10m wasn't worth it -- thank you to jeep. I use witterings tag for any 'what I'm thinking' post, but this one is so more so. Maybe tags should be graded. And I should have had this on rabbit hole day. There you go. It's even *more* random by not being so :)
[1] "Somehow" is cheating in fic, but it does happen. See?

Date: 2006-01-31 03:09 pm (UTC)Now I have read it slowly, and I have worked out (I think) that the frog bit is a reference to TP's Truckers etc, and worked out why *this* was more useful than this and that that was what you were commenting on, I still don't know what the circumference is on about, my bike using to be delicate loses me again, and I have to climng on to footnotes and replace the whole thing with being in my head, and now I don't know where we are, but I'm still going, but I don't know who Hope is, or what she did, or for that matter what you're trying to do. I don't know what you're puzzled by - the jeep? And things get louder and then quieter and it makes it hard to hear the quiet bits and the loud bits are too loud. So now it's making a bit more sense, because you've explained what Hope did, and I'm paying attention. Except I'm not paying attention because the clingfilm comment broke me.
So I made it to the end, but only because you asked me what I didn't get. What I can't do is read it easilly, and fluently, it hurts and breaks, and maybe that is interesting, and I should stretch myself, not expect LJ to spoonfeed me easilly digestable mildly amusing pap...
*brain falls out of ears*

Date: 2006-01-31 03:30 pm (UTC)Frogs. I meant that our eyes are attuned to change, so a flashing or moving light draws attention more than a steady one. And frogs supposedly see movement even more primarily, because they're looking for flies. Which may have been an issue in Jurassic Park, because they said the T-rex didn't see still things, though debunked this in JPII. Which is funny if you happen to know all that and think like me.
The circumference is a reference to my last-post-but-one, about the relative circumferences of two nested convex shapes.
Hope Hubris is the protaganist in Piers Anthony's Tyrant series.
Etc.
I hope people to skim it and not get all of it, but be interested by something.
I called out some nice phrases in bold to draw people's eyes when they're skimming; I see it does make it hard to read, sorry.

Date: 2006-02-01 01:57 pm (UTC)But I thought it was worth pointing out quite how difficult (for me) it had become, that you probably were writing for a very niche market, and if you wanted to write very cool and difficult stuff for a niche market it was great, but you should be aware of how small your niche is :-)

Date: 2006-01-31 07:57 pm (UTC)Although such constructions used to be common, the phrasal verb is now defective, occurring only in the past tense (compare to beware, which lacks a past tense). Here are some OED quotes for early examples:
c1440 Gesta Rom. v. 12 His modir vsith euery day gretly to sorowe.
1596 SPENSER F.Q. V. viii. 17 Her name Mercilla most men vse to call.
1670 MILTON Hist. Eng. VI. 304 The English then useing to let grow on their upper-lip large Mustachio's.
(note use of the apostrophe :-)
[3] Which came first? Pain (v) or pain (n)? I'm OEDless.
It's not clear. Pain (n) comes from Old French/Anglo-Norman peine (n) and is attested first for Middle English in a c.1300 manuscript. Pain (v) seems to be linked both with the Middle English noun and with the Anglo-Norman/French verb peiner, and is first attested in Middle English in a manuscript described as probably dating to around 1330, but possibly pre-1300!
