Doctor Who
Apr. 15th, 2006 07:54 pm* The story faltered a bit in the middle -- the evilness of the incineration was kind of forumulaic -- but was generally good, and creepy with the breakout.
* The script was good, and had some nice funnies. I laughed at NNYPD.
* Nice visuals. I did feel the planet was a lovely new earth, the up top patients were funny, the building was shiny, the down below patients were creepy.
* I still haven't got used to Tennant, though. I liked him occasionally, mainly when he was being Cassandra, but after all that "What will the new doctor be like" brouhouha at Christmas, it seems like they're trying and failing to make him the same devil-may-care doctor Eccleston was, when he could do a different sort of doctor well.
* The musical bodies bit was lovely. I saw the answer a second before Cassandra did, and was really pleased she (a) thought of it (b) had the nerve to do it and (c) got out afterwards.
* But the cure, while sweet, was kind of stupid. You can really have every disease? Including non-communicatable ones? And, while the cat-girls are still researching their cure, you don't die in ten minutes from the most virulent? And then they cure *all* of them? Not even one nasty one mutated? It would've made more sense and been equally plotty if different patients had had different cocktails, and not all were in the front rank of the zombies.
* And the despite-being-grown-in-a-vat-we-speak-a-language thing, while dumb, did have a nod to a rationalisation in what's-her-name's thesis, so I have to forgive them.
* The ending with Cassandra wanting to keep Rose and then moving to her servant, and meeting herself, was touching. Though her reversal when she entered him was rather abrupt.
* Overall, I can never tell. I need some emotional distance first, then I'll look back on it and see how I liked it compared to the other series.
