I knew the result might be depressing, but I didn't expect this. On the very first page, it said:

"You have no friends. This test cannot proceed."

I didn't expect to be *that* sad!

(OK, actually, I'd made a typo entering my name. In truth. I've met everyone! I've hugged pretty much everyone I've met more than twice. I've kissed almost three people and dated almost one, I think. Maybe if I kissed more compscis and shy young girls with photos of cats they'd have LJs and I'd have a higher score.)

In the M&S just outside Birmigham station I was queing behind a couple, the women of whom turned to me and said "I'm hiding the cakes." After briefly wondering if either of us were mad, I replayed the last 10 seconds and realised she'd been holding her backet to the side of her husband's head, and I'd been staring without realising, but that in fact it was between his eyes and a row of lucious cakes. We conversed for a moment until we were served, but I had to end the conversation with "At this point, I have to say I think your strategy has become counterproductive."

Yesterday I went out with Dad. We started walking up the pub to the camp with a dog he walks for someone, then visited a couple of obscure worcester pubs he finds nostalgic. If I've counted right I beat him seven times, which is very unusual, at: twice crib, thrice pool, and twice dominoes (5s and 3s). All were very, very close (on the black ball, in dead hole for ages, etc) apart from the first domino game, when I streaked ahead. I shouldn't feel pleased, but he's still normally a bit better than me, so I think I can savour it. And if I've counted right I had 6 pints, of scrumpy, IPA and Banks's. The most satisfying bit was when I led with the double five and he knocked and I managed to score about 14 before forced to get rid of it, though he got his own back with sixes and threes later that round.

Day three. Some evidence of plot starts to appear.
Lord Hong slammed into a floor so totally black it dwarfed the merely starless sky above him. This was the true ancient black, and seemed to suck the heat from his bones. A strangely indeterminate distance away a small oak table held a chessboard between two chairs. Nearby the floor appeared lit, and verging on very dark grey. He struggled to his feet and walked towards the table. In the distance, a few shapeless forms moved through the dark floor, sending ripples of more and less black along it.
