Spontaneous games playing, as there's nothing else going on this weekend, and I haven't for a while, will take place at mine, from about 7. The game I feel most like playing is (Star) Munchkin or possibly Mao, feel free to bring other Munchkin games, or Killer Bunnies!

There's a couple of people who'd like to, is anyone else interested?

(BTW if you said you were busy and I didn't email you, that's why :))

ETA: Email me if you need to know where I live.

I know I'll regret saying this, but I've never played any of those games. Are they suitably geeky? I've heard of Mao before but have never played. I get easily confused. -_-

I thought you were waiting for may week, are you being in cambridge? after all I think you would enjoy them in general, and if you wanted to come would enjoy them specifically

Munchkin's a well designed amsuingly silly spoof of roleplaying games. It exemplifies having enough rules to be fun, but you don't have to worry about how they all interact at once. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munchkin_(card_game) is a description. Most people find it a good compromise between thinking hard and not thinking.

Killer Bunnies is much the same sort of game, though completely different gameplay, and is also good because it has killer bunnies in! I'm partly hosting this because Martin is back in town staying with A.; killer bunnies will be there if they bring it :)

"Suitably geeky" to me suggests games with simple rules but unending complexity like Go, which I like in general but don't feel like this weekend. Blockus (http://cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com/150792.html) is a good example thereof, which I have, also anything from http://www.gigamic.com/uk/jeux_strategie.php is great. OTOH, if lambasting roleplaying is your thing, Munchkin qualifies.

Mao is *very* geeky, depending what style of game you have -- some games end up mainly remembering many silly things to do ("Stand on one leg, spank a fellow player, say anemonemonefish twice, say last card, say seven of spades, say have a nice day, say duplo, mao") and some with amusing interactions of complicated rules (These two suits are swapped, but odd numbers also do foo, so...)

Most people -- whether intellegent or not, and geeky or not -- either love it or hate it, so everyone should try it once.

I'm provisionally choosing sometime round about the 15th to come down, so that I catch the start of May Week at the weekend (and also take part in the infamous jelly wrestling :P). In any case I wouldn't mind trying these games at some point, even if all the geeks point and laugh at me because I'm such a n00b. -_-

Haha, Mao sounds funny! "Stand on one leg, spank a fellow player, say anemonemonefish twice, say last card, say seven of spades, say have a nice day, say duplo, mao" sounds like something I'd do after a few glasses of wine. :P

Wow, people are taking this seriously! But I'm punting and don't listen to Rock so won't be there. I can invite people to a non-binary orgy is you like :)

After two weeks I'll probably have *another* hankering for games, I may host something mid-week.

sounds like something I'd do after a few glasses of wine. :P

Random exmaple. Random. Totally arbitrary example. In conclusion: random. I don't have inarticulate spanking parties at all, oh no. Just ask Pippa :)

Don't forget the deductions. I think the right ratio is about (1:1:1) simple "do things when" rules : simple card altering rules : complicated card altering rules... If you just have silliness, it's fun, but it's Uno not Mao :)

Heh, perhaps it was the thought of [livejournal.com profile] _catharine_ and I wrestling in jelly that made people so keen. Well, I mean 12 people on my f'list want to see it, so that's pretty conclusive. :P

I don't have inarticulate spanking parties at all, oh no.

Damn shame, that is. ;) But I'd still definitely try Mao, so if you want to see a confused pixie at your place with her brain dribbling out onto the floor, let me know. :)

It's funny, I tried to get people interested in a "Wrestle Pixie in her own brain fluid" party, but they just went "ick". The jelly[1] seems more popular.

However, mao in may week makes sense. Probably on tuesday or wednesday?

Damn shame, that is. ;)

Seriously, what is it with clasicists and spanking? I'd guess it's a knowing latin/going to public school thing, except that neither of those correlate at all. :)

Yes, Mao then would be teh win, I reckon. I'll see how travel arrangements pan out, and all that.

Heh, no idea, but it seems to be a trend, doesn't it? *waves innocently at altjournal* 0:)

What's with the sudden self-deprecation? You might be a n00b, but everyone is the first time, the thing for them and the people they play with to remember is that you always do a bit badly at first, that's not a reflection on your competance.

Eh, I do the self-deprecation thing a wee bit sometimes. I'm sure that geeks don't want to laugh at me really. And anyway, one day I'll be a mighty geek and worthy of elder geeks' respect. :P

That's interesting actually. Did any people you might consider mighty geeks used to say "One day..." and now say "Now I have achieved mightyness, people should bow down!" or start off about as modest or bold as they are now, but it just come more or less into focus as they achieve more things to be modest/bold about? :)

I know, sorry. You're one of the people I would cc email, but I specifically didn't because of exam. I don't expect much mao, but it felt good to have the option depending who turns up.

Good luck -- will you be at pizza celebrating or off being catatonic ginmonster somewhere? :)
