I have two amazon accounts with the same email but different names. One headed by the legend "Hello, Jack Surname", the other with the message "Hello, Jack. WRONG ACCOUNT! USE OTHER PASSWORD." Today this helped me.

... why do you have two amazon accounts with the same email where only one is to be used?

I'm not positive of the exact sequence of events. I think I had an amazon account from a few years before, tried to log in, couldn't remember the details and had the impression it must have not existed, been cancelled, or under another email/password I no longer had, and created another. However, in fact, it seemed I created another account with the same email address.

Thus when you log in, and more annoyingly when you reconfirm your password, if you use the other password you silently get the other account, with no indication of which is right.

This became apparent when a recent order had no record, and I emailed amazon support and they worked out and explained the situation. I felt stupid for accusing them when I had made a mistake, but kind of annoyed that they made it possible.

I didn't see a way of deleting an account, and besides, I think I might have used it once and didn't want to erase any history there was, so changed the name to remind me.

There must surely be a way of changing the email address for an account? People must want to do that. (I believe cantab supports the name+foo@ form of emails?)

You're right! Why didn't I do that? Because I think of myself as always having one email account, and hate multiplying that. However, I don't really mind if this account has a dead email. Cantab, apparently, unfortunately, doesn't yet (I really want that), but I used my back-end email account, and if I move that, well, so be it.

I can't work out my cantab address. the variants of m.h.allen-williams.2000 I've tried don't seem to work. I've lost/forgotten the password, and I'm not sure where it forwards to.

I looked you up in the directory. It's M.H.Allen-Williams.00@cantab.net. You haven't set up an alias (mair@cantab.net, etc).

As for getting in if you've lost both email and password, I can't help; I assume you know which accounts it *might* go to?

okay, I sent myself a new password email. if it turns up anywhere, I guess I'll find out where it's going :D

I don't know. LOL. Actually, I thought anyone could use the directory, but it seems like only logged in members can -- did they change it?

How many accounts do you have you can still access?

I have my main account, cantab, my backend account, gmail, my old back-end, a friend's server, and a few disposable free ones (eg. hotmail). My cam accoutn expired. But I think I would only have used any but cam or cantab for a particular reason.

Admittedly, cantab is supposed to be from where everything flows, I really should keep it's password reminder email up to date...

well, everything accessible ends up on flurble.org now, and a few of those get bounced onto gmail. of those there's my allen-williams.com which is a pop account and fetchmailed to flurble.org, and @soton which redirects to @ecs.soton, which is also then fetchmailed. those I can therefore find when flurble.org goes down ...

I was a little afraid cantab might still be trying to forward to a cam.ac.uk address - tho' my cl.cam.ac.uk *does* still work - but it seems that it's going to allen-williams.com, so I have my password reminder.

I only found I didn't know the address any more when I was trying to look up someone in the database a few weeks ago.
