Outside cineworld, there is a giant 3d snowman made from lights, as if giant christmas lights were molded into that shape. It looks amazingly 3d. But it's not clear why, since it really *is* 3d, as is everything else in the area.

I can only guess that the tessellation of lights shows the contours of the surface in a way very typical of computer-rendered or other 2d perspective drawings, and is instinctively compared to those, but totally wins because it's genuinely completely accurate.

I havn't seen the snowman, but your description reminded me of this not-CGI image.

I'm sure someone has a picture of this thing, but I can't remember where.

And not really, but that is cool. Their description is just right, it's nearly better than life. You'd get tired if you saw it all the time, but it really does look golden in the picture.

You might be thinking of [livejournal.com profile] meirion's post here (friends-locked, but I expect you can see it)? I'm not sure if it's the same snowman, but if I remember rightly it's at least reasonably similar.

Ah! Yes, I think I was, and I can (though I don't know if dave can). It looks familiar, and I think it *is* the same one. At any rate, it looks exactly the same, and the buildings behind could be the ?hotel? that's there. It's hard to see on the picture, the scarf and head have the same look (to my eye) which make it such a great christmas image, but the body did too in real life.

For some reason I expected your link to be to this...

I expected that, too. I was planning to find it and post it but you've saved me the hassle.

That is more appropriate, and also quite cool and Tron-ish. I suspect it would be even better/stranger in real life.
