A reminder, Torchwood continues tonight at 9.00, featuring rogue time agent James Masters, aka Captain John, in a big flapping coat kissing rogue time agent John Barrowman, aka Captain Jack, in a big flapping coat.

Pippa's one-true-fivesome icon is going to run out of room and explode soon.

Spoiler note: I've no idea if they actually will kiss each other. I just want to get Pippa's hopes up. For all I know, Captain Jack will find out about the face of bo thing and get all serious and season 2 will not be about flirting with aliens and Captains Jack and John will be the first bisexual main characters not to kiss each other.

I thought Torchwood #1 had a lot of good ideas, but didn't really work as a whole, so I want to give #2 a try, but may end up waiting till I can borrow them all on DVD later.

There was a trailer and a report which suggested there might be more content in the new series, especially of a science fiction nature;

Oh, I see. That makes sense, I didn't see that.

I expected more science, more thought, and more depth.

Yes, that *would* have been nice. You could see it was trying in some sense -- the rain-swept welsh streets and autocratic in/irresponsible government agency all suggest something grittier, it had the *trappings* of a more adult sort of science fiction, but didn't actually go so far as to, eg. explore interesting ideas of science (or even have an interesting plot, despite a number of good ideas).

Perhaps I would have been able to accept it as a bit of entertaining trivia if it *hadn't* had the good ideas. Wasted! And now if other writers came along who could develop the good ideas, it would be decried as derivative.

Aha! We need a Torchwood spin-off.

I can't possibly believe that's the right answer to anything, though it's awfully tempting ;) Or a rip-off: after all there are other somewhat similar rainy techno-fantasy series.

If you gave the premise, the characters, and some of the ideas to someone else to make, it could be really quite good. I'm just wondering of whom I've said "Well, they're really good at plot and science, if only someone had given them interesting premises and characters" :)
