1. After years, I finally installed something to use the GPS on my phone. I'd always meant to, but not got round to it. Not route-planning software, but started with google maps. (Which would generally be fine for me, I'm not generally driving strange places, but would just like to see nearby roads. OTOH, it's impractical to use abroad, since it needs to download the maps.)

It was freaky -- even before it found the satellites, it guessed where I was from triangulating the telephone masts! Last night it couldn't get a lock, and my position jumped all round Chesterton and Arbury. But once I'd left it searched for satellites for three minutes, it figured it out.

2. You can draw Œ! Except that of course, I normally never want to, so a more reliable letter-recognising would be better.

3. BTW, any recommendations for visiting Florence?

BTW, any recommendations for visiting Florence?

Other than "do it, the place is good and the architecture and art is gorgeous"?

I highly recommend going to the Uffizi Gallery, and if you do so you need to book in advance, because that makes the difference between a zero-to-ten-minute wait to get your prebooked tickets, and an hour-or-more wait to buy the tickets on the door.

I can also recommend the yarn shops I found in Florence but I'm guessing that's less helpful. :)

Florence is all good!

Unless you're afraid of heights or (slightly) confined spaces, climb the dome in the Cathedral. The fresco on the dome interior is amazing.

The Ponte Vecchio is worth a stroll over.

Eat some of the icecream.

Remember it's possible to see too many art galleries; you'll regret it if you try to visit them all in the same trip.
