The Cambridge Tolkien(TM) Society agm was on saturday. It was pretty professional, and we did, like, accounts and stuff :)

There was discussion on the Tolkien(TM) being trademarked issue(TM). A couple of resolutions were passed, hoping to head off any similar trouble in the future, though whether that'll ever be necessary we don't know.

Everyone thinks we should do *something* about it, but no-one really has time for a protracted legal battle. Mark's offered to help, and we hope to do something, though some of the committee can't take any more of it.

There were amusing motions of censure, including, as most societies seem to have, ones repeated every year against people who's original crimes have long been forgotten. Neil was *not* censured[2].

I am keeper of the red book.

Dinner

Then there was dinner. The food was good (often expensive stuff seems to be not worth it, but this was nice). As was the wine (though that might just have been mho). I ended up staying everso late, and all in all was a wonderful evening. It was nice to see people I know but I don't normally see very often. Many people looked squeeful in blakc ties or wonderful dresses (or red silk chinese thingies).

I kissed many (well, a few) people[1], and there were many lesbian socialist utopias, though some people doubt the validity of the one made up of men. There was also much cuddling with people who might have felt kissing was too far, which I hope everyone enjoyed (sorry to anyone who didn't).

There was much geeky scifi/fantasy discussion I don't remember that well, including even some Tolkien!

The next day I did have a bit of a hangover, and didn't drink on sunday at poohsoc agm, due to training course on monday. I don't seem to get *headaches* with a hangover, I just feel woozy. So it could be a lot worse. If I can curl up at home, then they're not a problem. Though here it was unfortunate that I woke up at 11ish and couldn't sleep, and then felt normally tired again a bit later, just in time to go out. But a bit of food, and getting up form bed every hour to drink water helped a lot.

Footnotes

[1] I realised about 3/4 of the way through the night something that had started to dawn on me at the *last* drunken kissing orgy I was at. I sort of missed out on the phase of life eveyone else goes through at school where you get to be wanton and experiment (skipping straight to the 'serious long term relationship' at uni), and since relived it a bit, but now, like a lot of other poeple did, I grew up, by realising that it was nice, but I've done it now, and something more meaningful was desirable.[3]

[2] Poohsoc tradition, except that Neil is still about, even if he can't come to poohsoc much. And death circuses were mentioned, but only briefly[4].

[3] On the other hand, I didn't kiss anyone I didn't actually *like* (last time having felt a rather cheap when I kissed people who were pretty and wanted to kiss me, but I didn't really know or like) so that turned out well.

[4] Spawned at a cusfs discussion last week. Now I say it all the time, like a death circus.

Apparently you passed a motion commiserating with CUTwC on their sad demise, but missed out the key fact that we're not actually quite dead yet. And will be beating you at croquet again this year. :p

That did come up in the pub later, but boringly/wisely we hadn't taken the agm there so it didn't get minuted. Someone assured us the rumours of your demise were greatly exagarated, though before that there were definite moves afoot to join :)

What does Rupert do at matches?

What does Rupert do at matches?

At croquet matches, do you mean?

Date: 2005-03-17 02:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cartesiandaemon.livejournal.com
That's what I meant. (In terms of being both CT(tm)S and winker, apparently.)

Though if your response means he does anything interesting and noteworthy at other sorts of matches I'm curious as to what :)

Oh, I think he plays for us, seeing as he's an active member of the winks club, and I don't think he ha any actual interest in Tolkien.

It just struck us as amusing. When we'd entertained the possibility you'd died, we were thinking of finding a new nemesis, and thought poohsoc might be good. But then we realised there's be so much overlap we'd basically be playing with, well, ourselves, and that sends you blind :)

I missed out on the whole wanton phase too, except I still haven't caught up and now I'm at home :( It's tragic!

True. I just feel a bit old and past it now. It's fine when you're 16, or even a fresher, but I'm in my twenties *sobs* In fifty years I'll probably be dead! ;)

Shutupshutupshutup. I'm still young, ok, so you must be too :)

But yes, it's never quite the same when you don't know you'll have forever to do what you want and drunken parties are just for now. But I've been wanton with over-30s at least once, and it was good, though, as aforementionly vochsafed, I'm planning to cut down :)

I did experiments at school, but I doubt my science teachers would have liked them called wanton.

I don't remember sticking my tongue in anything, although I frightened my chemistry partner once by blowing a bunsen burner out, which is sort of like, well, it's with my mouth, anyway.

...and would also fill the room with asphixiating explosive gas.

I remember someone thinking it was a good idea to chain a battery and a lot of transformers and his tongue together. It seemed logical at the time (and turned out perfectly safe). But no, I never stuck my tongue in anything more chemical than Roz's mouth :)

Why are they never whirling blades of *life*?

Hello, Reeve here, in case you hadn't worked it out already :-)

I'm sure they have been sometimes. Witness the pleasure machine in barbarella, or what CureLightWounds does to undead, or the blades in Indy Jones powered by the breath of god. But why stop there? Whirling blades of being turned into siced mauve fishes are *compeletely* unrepresented. As are shuriken of transcendence, and awesome clubs of the first teusday in may. Armour of righteousness is well-known, though.

Actually, I'm normally hopeless, but for some reason I found your name and blog title incredably descriptive when I saw you posting on someone else's journal, and guessed it was you I don't know how, though I didn't friend you then in case I was wrong again :)
