And oh, look :) I have signed up to a C. U. R. S. Roleplaying Game (TM), with DnD fourth edition. Do you have any General Advice (TM) for making a fun mid-level Warlock character before Friday?

Gnome Warlock - they become invisible whenever they move. Dark Pact is the way forward, especially if your DM lets you reskin things for flavour and frankly, if he doesn't, he's a shite DM. Fey pact otherwise. If you can get any magic items, you want a quickcurse rod if fey pact, or the rod which stores Dark Spiral Auras for Dark Pact. You also want the Bracers of the Perfect Shot - it adds to Eldritch Blast damage. Do not bother with your secondary attributes. Pick the three which max out your defenses and offenses as a Warlock and ignore the rest. Jack of All Trades is worth the feat slot because gaining training in skills is so difficult. If you can, get the Decree of Khirad daily power.

Oh, and be aware that the system has no flavour whatsoever. Anything in the game will have to come from the players and DM.

And no, save that the uneven effect makes reading the sentence mildly uncomfortable.

... and why did they change 3.5, which seems a fairly workable system?

Well, (a) they have a natural incentive to WANT to upgrade the system every 10 years so they can sell more stuff and (b) whether or not one likes the direction they took 4th ed in, it apparently certainly does improve on 3.5 in many ways (whether or not one thinks they are worth it for the things that are lost).
