I just got a letter from Halifax. "Now your home insurance renewal is nearly due, isn't it time for a change?" What on earth? Is this a scam?

How can a reputable company send you a letter saying "We have illegally obtained your personal financial records. Please send us more of them?"

It's public record here whenever someone buys a house. And, naturally, since you have to have insurance when you buy the house, and you buy it at the same time you buy the house, the best time to send you "switch to us!" letters is about 11 months after your name appears in the public records.

I bought my house in June and sure enough, all last month I got five or six letters from various companies just desperate to sell me cheaper home insurance.
